Sony Ericsson K300 review: Summer hit

Roman Krejča, 02 May 2005. Read the original review at MobilMania.cz

The new Sony Ericsson K300 is a cheap and elegant phone equipped with built-in camera, plenty of interesting functions and immensely fast Java applications. In terms of design it picks up again the legendary T610 model. Its initial price, however, was set at less than 170 euros.

The first news about Sony Ericsson K300 was published as early as November last year. At a discussion forum back then a blurred photo of a somewhat small mobile phone appeared. Its code name was Kristina. Many people did not trust that information, many other considered it even spurious. Fortunately, it turn out not to be a fraud and the new Sony Ericsson K300 is now lying on our editor's desk.

In no way does the K300 model renounce its parents. Take one quick look and your doubts will disappear. We have been offered another device manufactured by mother Sony and father Ericsson. The new model is closely related to the current K500 model. In fact, both phones have almost identical functions. What is different about the new model is its slightly poorer equipment and lower price.

No design experiments, just classic elegancy

The first impression the phone leaves is of a solid device, whose keypad resembles a certain relation to the older T610 model. The phone is available in two main color versions - silver and silver-blue.

When you see the phone for the first time, your attention will be attracted by the wider margin around the display, which optically outstands far more in the phone's silver-blue version than in the plain silver one. Nevertheless, this detail does not disturb the well-balanced image of the whole device for it gradually curves the upper edge of the phone and continues onto its back side. The keypad takes up approximately one half of the front side of the phone.

The stand-by will probably please you

Sony Ericsson K300's size is 100 × 46 × 21 mm; together with its weight of 85 g it fits into the category of small and light phones. The antenna is built-in, as usual. If you take a close look at phone's side parts, you will find nothing else but the QuickShare button placed on the left side of the phone, which shortcuts the start of the camera. On the top edge is the switch-on button, accompanied by the dark slot of the infrared port. Under the latter is also hidden the unobtrusive state diode. The only thing to be found on the bottom side of the phone is the system connector, which is just the same as the connector of the older Sony Ericsson models. It provides enough support for all equipment extras.

The plastic shell of the battery spreads over nearly the whole back side of the phone; the latter includes a bulging tiny mirror which serves for taking self-portraits using the built-in camera. Right next to it you will find the camera lens. The shell that hides the battery is quite thin, so creaky sounds come out every time you press the cover, no matter how much effort you put into this.

What keeps body and soul together is the lithium-polymer accumulator of 700 mAh capacity. According to the information provided by the manufacturer, it should be enough for 300 hours in a stand-by mode and up to 420 minutes of phone calls. Our experience from the phone's testing proved this rather high-standard holding time. Yet, we did not have enough time to measure it properly. As for the charging time, the accumulator needs about two hours to get fully charged.

Something in the keys' design stumbles

The distribution of the keys is similar to the keypads of other new Sony Ericsson mobile phones. Right under the upper edge of the display you will find a pair of soft buttons, which manage the main controlling functions of the phone. Their role changes during the work with the phone, with the current one being displayed in the bottom state line of the display.

The keypad design reminds of the classical T610 model

The phone has a five-way joystick, which is relatively embedded, but is still quite comfortable and easy to control. On both its sides you will find the correct key and a button, which gets you back to a higher menu level. Perhaps many users will find the button that serves for starting the WAP browser unnecessary; fortunately, its functions will be possible to change in phones, which are offered separately, besides the official promotions of the mobile operators.

The keypad left me somewhat puzzled. Even though the keys are big enough for comfortable and fast writing, the distance between them is sufficient, and their uplift is not bad at all, it is a mystery for me why one does not write on them as well as expected. Apparently, the blame is to be pinned on the touch layer used under the keys, which lacks a sure final press; besides that, pressing the keys requires too much effort.

More colors

At first sight, the passive display appears to be identical with the display of the cheap Z200 stylish clamshell. Both displays have been manufactured by using (nearly) the same technology - STN for Z200 and DSTN for K300. Both feature the same resolution: 128 x 128 pixels and have identical size: 29 × 29 mm. The only difference is that K300 supports 65K colors, while the Z200 model supports only 4K. In addition to that, the new model features images of much better quality.

Display in the dark.. • ..and in daylight

The display is one of the main features that differentiate this model from Sony Ericsson K500. The latter one had an active and also a bigger display: it featured a resolution of 128 × 160 pixels on a surface of 31 × 39 mm.

The rectification of the information on the Sony Ericsson K300's display is good. You will not meet "ghosts" even if you make the fastest moves possible. The display is easy to read in a room or in twilight. Yet, at direct daylight, you will not see that much. The backlighting could have been evener.

Bubbles in the menu

The Sony Ericsson developers have proved to be very good at designing the graphic environment of their mobiles. Nor this time have they let down our expectations. The main menu view consists of icons we are familiar with from other models of the brand. You can choose out of 9 icons, which are displayed in a square matrix scheme. When marked, the icon starts to animate impressively; it gets fluently bigger until it finally stands out in an oval bubble.

Main menu

To switch from the stand-by mode to the menu press the middle part of the joystick. Fortunately, this model's joystick is not as soft and sensitive as the one of the K500 model. Any non-intentional swinging sideways mistaken for confirming is almost impossible, even if you go for a quick move.

Main display with various wallpaper • possible setup of the navigation key

There is no doubt you will manage the phone's control functions with ease, provided the K300 model is just another Sony Ericsson you are holding in your hands. Runaways from the competition brands may be blundering about a bit in the first few moments, but be sure you will get used to the controlling process in a very short time.

What is worth praising is the option for using one's own graphic themes. You can create them on your computer or download them through the WAP browser, directly from internet.

The same poor address book

The phone's speaker is loud enough. The phone also offers a built-in handsfree, which is of a surprisingly high quality. The voice does not get modified even at maximum loudness level, and has a balanced bass component. Nor did the opposite side have any complaints about echoes or voice cuts when we were testing phone calls and assessed the quality of the voice reproduction as being slightly above standard. You can change the loudness level during an ongoing call by moving the joystick sideways.

The built-in phonebook of Sony Ericsson K300 takes in up to 510 numbers, but not names. The disadvantage of the K500 model is back: if you assign 5 phone numbers per contact, the phone manages to save 100 contacts only. And let's confess it - it is lamentably insufficient. Why does Sony Ericsson improve its address books in its latest expensive mobiles only? Apparently, the problem is not caused by lack of storage space, since the phone has 12 MB memory. At the same time, the device allows for assigning of as many as 18 records to each item! Fortunately, it has finally become possible to search the address book by more than one initial letter. However, a joint view of all items in the internal memory and in the SIM card is still not available.

Searching the phone address book • to view the items of a certain contact, roll horizontally • contact editing

Pressing the joystick downwards gets you straight to the address book - this type of setting can be easily changed later. A given thing is the call-filter function for each individual profile: either in the address book as a whole, or among names or groups. Filters could be used for mass SMS sending as well. When I was synchronizing data I was pleased to find the phone is equipped with an option for contact sorting by both first and last name. Each contact can be assigned a picture or a photo, which appear on the display when a call is received.

Polyphonic ringing plays 40 voices. Due to the implemented independent speaker it is loud enough even for the loudest environment. Ringing can be quickly lowered by pressing the hash key; if you press and hold the same key in a stand-by mode, you will turn on or turn off the quiet mode of the phone. Ringing melodies could also be created by using favorite music saved in MP3 format. Moreover, you can create melodies of your own using the comfortable environment of the MusicDJ composer.

The phone manages MP3 files • creating one's own ringing profile • multimedia data

Perfect for messages

SSony Ericsson K300 could be considered the nearly ideal phone for writing messages. It manages common SMS and modern MMS; the graphic design of the editor environment is once again impressive. There are two ways for writing messages: using the T9 dictionary or the standard Multitap system.

When writing SMS, the phone offers four text lines only, although the display allows for at least one more common size line. Well, the toll for the attractive graphics must show somewhere, earlier or later. The font size is big enough; 5 text lines are offered for reading received messages. Up to 100 text messages of common size can be saved into the phone's built-in memory.

As for the high quality editor, it has stayed almost unchanged in several Sony Ericsson models. Some old good functions are to be found here again, for example, the "Reply and delete" function, the option to view sent messages, or an automatic list of the last four contacts sent to the selected message addressee. As usual, the incoming messages are saved in the phone's built-in memory; the SIM card is used only as an archive, into which messages have to be copied manually.

Writing text messages • creating multimedia messages

The built-in memory for multimedia messages is shared with the rest of the data. As for the editor - no changes have been made: you can insert pictures, photos or music accompaniment (can be in mp3 format). In contrast to the K500 model, Sony Ericsson K300 is quite fast in inserting objects into a message; yet, it is still far from being a high-class sprinter. It is still quite slow when opening messages with several attached pictures.

Nothing has been changed in the built-in email client. It is able to create up to 10 different mail accounts. It supports both POP3 and IMAP, but is not able to use secure connections yet. Even though this particular disadvantage can be considered an obstacle in an office environment, work is not the main focus of this Sony Ericsson model. The phone does not support SMTP authentication.

Email client menu • reading email

The email client is equipped for working with email attachments; it easily attaches any type of document taken from the phone's built-in memory. Attachments which are part of the incoming mail can also be saved into the phone, no matter if the phone can open them or not. Just like in the older K500 model, this phone denies to open received messages which contain text attachments. According to our findings, email messages' capacity is limited, allowing a maximum of 1000 characters.

Organize your time

Phone's options for time organizing are really basic and will hardly surprise anyone nowadays. Besides the simple (and non-changed - as usual) calendar, K300 offers an event organizer, a notebook, an alarm clock, a countdown timer, a stopwatch and a calculator.

Extras menu is relatively rich

Although the events placed into the calendar are not possible to repeat, they can be saved for unlimited period of time and, what's more, the notice of the given event can get started any time before the event itself; tasks can be assigned to individual days; tasks that have been done are marked by a change in the intro pictogram. As for the "notebook", it uses the SMS editor for creating its own messages, which, by the way, are no different from the common ones, except for the fact that they are saved into the phone's internal memory.

Month and week view of the calendar • event organizer

There are two available alarm clocks. The first one is a normal one; the second one has a repeating function; both are however independent. They share the one and only melody.

Java sprinter

What is really surprising about Sony Ericsson K300 is the extreme speed, with which it manages the applications created in the mobile Java. When tested with jBenchmark 1.0 | 2.0 it performed the stunning result of 3773 | 175, which sends it among the first top ten java mobile phones. None of us really expected such an excellent performance from a device of the class given. What's more, this mobile's Java application is accompanied by the 3D technology Mascot Capsule Engine Micro3D Edition, which is meant to fasten the creating of tri-dimensional games and their playing process. Regretfully, the two games delivered with the phone are not able to perform that many tri-dimensional juggles, so that one can make a full use of this technology.

The phone has two preinstalled games

Data transfers are possible thanks to the data support managed through GPRS; the latter is, however, of the surprisingly low class 8. It is true that you will hardly notice the difference if you use the mobile WAP of the phone; yet, if you plan to use Sony Ericsson K300 as a mobile modem for a common connection of your computer to internet, the drop in speed will become more sensible.

No matter how, it just takes pictures

The maximum picture size is priori given by the physic resolution of the sensor, which is of 640 × 480 pixels. Nevertheless, the phone can take pictures in a megapixel resolution as well; it reaches the desired resolution of 1 280 × 960 pixels by making a software interpolation. As a result, the details in such "ala megapixel" image are almost invisible, which makes me think that majority of all users will hardly ever take this kind of pictures.

Camera's viewfinder • camera menu • choosing a frame for your photo

Anyway, pictures taken in the standard VGA resolution are very good. Besides the resolution types already mentioned, you can choose between two more; there are also two quality levels available for the pictures. It takes three seconds to save a picture in a resolution of 640 × 480 pixels, and about 8 seconds to save one in the megapixel format. Due to the built-in effects, one can take black and white, reversed and sepia shaded pictures; a solar effect is also available. Pictures can be additionally decorated by different frame types. To make things complete, we should also add that the phone has 4x digital zoom and is also able to shoot video of an average quality.

The summer hit

Sony Ericsson K300 is equipped with enough functions and options to satisfy the majority of the mobile phone users. The only weak aspect of its functional equipment is the small capacity of the phonebook. As for its size and weight, the phone is cutely small and comfortable. Phone's outlook is simple, but also elegant; the quality of the display is sufficient, controlling is relatively comfortable. If we add the reasonable price, that does not exceed 170 euros, there is no doubt the new Sony Ericsson model has extremely high chances to become the hit of the oncoming summer.
